What You Should Know Before Buying a Used Electric Car
Have you been thinking about buying an electric car? What about buying a used electric car? The idea may seem exciting, but also intimidating–particularly, if you’ve never owned an electric car before.
Not to worry! At Signal Garage Auto Care, we’re here to offer you guidance on electric cars. After all, these specific types of automobiles require some special thought and attention. While purchasing a used electric car can be valuable, it’s necessary to do research to ensure you’re making the best decision possible.
Take a look at these tips!
Tip #1: Find out if the battery has ever been replaced
Though rare with electric cars, battery failure can–and does–happen. In fact, higher-mile electric cars are likely to have had their batteries replaced. If this has happened to the electric car you’re considering buying, hopefully the seller can provide you with some sort of documentation to confirm the work. Look at this documentation closely to determine the estimated range of a full battery and how much battery is left on the car in question.
Additionally, find out if the battery is under any type of warranty. Most battery coverage runs for eight years of 100,000 miles after the initial purchase–whichever arrives first. Unfortunately, though, not all warranties are transferable.
Do your homework! Depending on what you discover (i.e. if the battery has been replaced, how much life is left in it, if the battery has a warranty, etc.), you can use this information as a bargaining chip.
Tip #2: Inquire about the maintenance history
It’s important to ask about maintenance history and, if possible, collect any and all service records that may be available. However, because electric cars generally need little maintenance, you may receive a small amount–if any–of service documents. This is good news!
Tip #3: Understand what range you need from the electric car
Today, electric car development has vastly improved. For example, early electric cars only reached up to 100 miles on a full charge–on a good day. Compare that figure to the new Tesla Model S, which can reach up to nearly 400 miles. It’s safe to say that future electric cars will likely reach even more miles.
Before you make your decision, understand the range you will need from your electric car, but also know that electric cars with higher ranges are more expensive.
Tip #4: Consider all charging factors
Make sure to consider all charging aspects of the electric car you’re thinking about purchasing. Remember, not all electric cars charge at the same rate. You’ll also want to map out where you can easily gain access to EV chargers. Are these chargers on your typical route, or will you have to go out of your way to access them?
Lastly, check for all charging accessories, and make sure they work!
